 «©NCSX» Minamoto Yoshitsune only lived for 30 years (1159-1189) but left behind a legacy of awe-inspiring military victories, breathtaking vengeance, and tragic betrayal. Despite serving his brother Yoritomo (who would eventually become Shogun of Japan) in eradicating the Taira clan in a mighty sea battle, Yoshitsune was forced to commit suicide by a growing enmity between siblings. The rift was fostered by the slanderous tongue of Yoshitsune’s rival, Kajiwara Kagetoki.
 
    Mythology gives Yoshitsune the honor of being trained in the way of the sword and all martial arts by Sojobo, the King of the Ten-gu demons. The PS2 game follows the military campaigns of Yoshitsune and gives the player control of the legendary warrior as well as a contingent of generals who follow commands with fastidious dedication. A good portion of the game revolves around brutal hack 'n slash action where entire battlefields are thrashed through while the other portion requires a sharp tactical mind to marshal forces into defensive or offensive positions to defeat opposing armies.

«©NCSX» After Commodore Perry "encouraged" the Japanese to sign the Treaty of Kanagawa on March 31st, 1854 and therefore opened up trade with the United States, Japan was thrown into chaos. Japan's 200 years of self-imposed isolation ended and the samurai ranks began to question the power of the Tokugawa Shogunate and its ability to defend Japan. In his second trip to Japan, Perry had threatened to shell Edo if his demands were not met and the Shogunate had buckled too easily to his whims. Journeying from the whole of Japan, marauding bands of roshis (masterless samurai warriors - not ronins or rurounis) gathered in Kyoto and sought to topple the perceived weak Shogunate and repel the western invaders who had arrived on the black ships.

   Taking place from 1860 through 1869 and reversing the roles of the prequel (Fuun Shinsengumi), players join the ranks of the roshi and battle the Shinsengumi who are policemen hired by the Shogunate to keep the peace. Walk around town, interact with fellow conspirators and engage the team-tactics of the Shinsengumi who beat down on insurgents in squads of four or more. Instead of being limited to Kyoto like the original, the new action-slasher takes place across Japan as organized gangs seek to cause ruckuses throughout the land.

   Historical recreations in the game include the Ikeda-ya slaughter where disgruntled Ishin Shishi (imperial swordsman) gathered in 1864 to plot the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate. After the meeting, many of the Ishin Shishi stayed in the Ikeda-ya inn and drank until they fell asleep. A band of roving Shinsengumi learned of the Ishin Shishi's plans and rushed into the inn and killed everyone. Afterwards, the Shinsengemi were credited with saving Kyoto and the Shogunate from a series of unfortunate events. The mission in this scenario is to protect Ishin Shishi leader Kogorou Katsura from the Shinsengumi and escape through a backdoor in the inn to keep the rebellion alive.

   In another scenario, players help Shimazu Hisamitsu of the Satsuma clan and soldiers in their 1868 overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Shimazu would eventually play a part in the Meiji Restoration.

Warning: This game includes graphic scenes of violence (blood splattered humans, people getting shot through the forehead, bodies falling like mere chaetal) and we recommend that the squeamish or easily offended NOT purchase this product.

«©NCSX» Front Mission 4 is set in a timeline between the first Front Mission game (2090) and the second (2102) so it's a prequel of sorts. Six years after the events in the original Front Mission game, two characters united by fate named Daril and Elsa are the new protagonists in a new storyline. Daril is a Wanzer driver with a bad attitude and Elsa is in research. Together, the two form a formidable and unlikely team.

   The United States of the New Continent (USN) and the Euro Continent (EC) are at it again and the machines of war are 18-foot mech-robos bristling with heavy artillery. Overly dramatic cinemas in Front Mission 4 seem almost cheesy... but this is Square, they can't be cheesy (can they?). Outside of the theatrics, the game is impressive with tactical battles where Wanzers at your command shoot or punch enemy soldiers at your behest. There's a movement phase and then an action phase - when firing away at an opposing unit, shots spray the hull of the mecha and little numbers will pop up everywhere which tally the damage each part has taken. For example, damage the mech's punching hand to the point of no return and it won't be able to attack at close range anymore. Destroy the weapon on it's shoulder and that's one less offensive weapon that you'll have to worry about. Square touts battlefield maps that are 10X the size of those found in Front Mission 3, which should make for some expansive missions and episodes.

   Like previous Front Mission games, Wanzer armor and weaponry may be adjusted and upgraded to higher levels of performance. The complete exo-skeleton of a wanzer may be bolstered and upgraded - from the left shoulder to the right arm to the backpack to the left hand... you get the idea. Color preferences for Wanzers may also be chosen to suit your whimsy along with a dizzying array of weaponry choices. Similar to previous games in the series, the menus are mostly in English which makes upgrading mecha fairly easy and the speech in the game is also in English.
