NCS
Product Synopsis
Update: April 20, 2007
«©NCSX» Taito collects 30+ games normally played on a standard controller and adapts most of them for the Wii Remote shaking realm of the Nintendo Wii. Quite a few of the games featured in the collection will be recognizable to fans of video gaming since Taito has been around since the early years of the industry. Some random samples:
» Arkanoid - Grip the Wii Remote and waddle it from side to side to control the Vaus as it reflects balls at blocks above. There's only one stage which is in the shape of a Space Invader.
» Kikikaikai Ninja - Take control of a shrine maiden garbed in red and white robes and shoot cards at spherical ghosts that pop out of nowhere to destroy them. Inspired by the coin-op of the same name.
» Soccer - Kick a ball by swirling the Wii Remote around like a maniac. It'll blow past two defenders but get stopped momentarily by the green afro-wearing goalie. To get it past him also, swirl the Wii Remote around to build power.
» Swan Shooter - A decent vertical shooter that's somewhat reminiscent of Danshaku. When you reach the boss, the warning text "CAUTION: A huge battle afro" appears across the screen. There's some challenging crossfire that the boss spits out along with a massive laser blast.
NCS Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, cutesy characters named Mawasunda and Mawasunda Pink run around, spin, and do their thing while muscle-bound men with afros hold up the globe and slowly rotate in place. Psychedelic colors and 60s flower-power fonts are in force.
» Press the A button and players may choose SOLO PLAY or DUAL PLAY. The OPTION menu allows you to choose the difficulty, change characters, view rankings, and perform file management duties. The Special Contents section is locked.
» After selecting SOLO PLAY, three modes pop up into view:
OKONOMI Mode
IKEMEN Challenge
SOKUTEI Mode
OKONOMI Mode contains 24 mini-games but five of them are locked. Some examples of the mini-games are described below:
» Sonic Blastman 20XX - Massive meteors are hurtling towards the planet and Blastman must push them back into space. Push up and down on the d-pad to rotate Blastman to meet the meteors and press A to force them back. A radar shows meteor entry from all sides of the playfield.
» Bubble Bobble - Classic arcade action where a green dragon captures beasts in bubbles and pops them. The monsters continually regenerate and the game goes on until the time runs out or all three of your lives are gone.
» Arkanoid - Sweet brick 'n paddle action which plays faithfully to the arcade original down to the sound effects and music. To move the Vaus, point the Wii Remote towards the screen and then shake it from side to side to move left and right. Not the best control scheme for Arkanoid but acceptable.
» Robo Clash - A massive robot is spinning above a city. Your little protagonist is carrying a big hammer. Whack the hammer upon the robot by moving the Wii Remote back and forth to destroy it. When the "DANGER" signal appears onscreen, press and hold the "B" button to step back as the robot spins its arms around. If you hit the robot continuously, the game engine keeps track of your hit combos. We got up to 13 combos before the robot started to spin and we had to back off a bit.
» Cameltry - Classic maze rotation action where a marble is moved from START to GOAL by rotating the maze around it. We thought the responsiveness would be poor but the screen spins surprisingly quickly and obediently to the manipulations of the Wii Remote. Kudos.
» Evil Magistrate - Grab a geisha's kimono and spin her around to unravel it. The Wii Remote motion to use is a forward-thrust and pull-back movement to get the spinning action going. If you do it perfectly, the geisha will spin out of her kimono and appear in her 2-piece bikini. Other targets include a poodle girl, a mummy (who turns into a skeleton when disrobed), and another geisha who turns into a Brazilian queen.
» Baseball - A pitcher with a massive afro throws pitches at the plate. When the ball is in that sweet spot over the plate, swing the Wii Remote like a bat and try to hit a home run.
IKEMEN Challenge
An interactive adventure where a lovelorn little boy (Mawasunda) has to win the hearts of five girls. The game lists each girl as "Targets" from 01 to 05. Before the action begins, you select the order in which you interact with each girl and then you go after them. The path to love is blocked by mini-games galore which must be conquered to win the affection of the girls. If you falter in a mini-game, the level of interest that a girl may have towards you will drop. On the other hand, if you navigate a mini-game successfully, she'll gain interest in you and perhaps love will eventually blossom.
SOKUTEI Mode
Select five mini-games and then play them in sequence one after the other. Perfect for those who enjoy non-stop action. The time limit is removed from some the games.
In DUAL PLAY, the options that pop up are:
FREE BATTLE
LOVE CHALLENGE
PANEL ATTACK
FREE BATTLE allows two players to play the mini-games simultaneously against each other. For example, in Swan Runner, the screen splits in half vertically and two players race through a tunnel while collecting power-ups and avoiding obstructions. Your only command is spinning the Wii Remote around to spin the tunnel so that obstructions are avoided and bonuses are picked up.
LOVE CHALLENGE
Choose 5 mini-games and play them one after the other against a second player. In between some games, there's a strange little launching game that may be enjoyed. We use the word "launch" loosely.
PANEL ATTACK
Sixteen mini-games are arranged in a 4x4 assortment on the screen. Play them one by one in whichever order you wish until all are completed.
» Before each mini-game, a diagram on how to hold the Wii Remote and simple instructions are shown on-screen.
» Every mini-game lasts about 90 seconds.
» The mini-games in Furu Furu Park are a varied lot and some are taken directly from the Mawasunda NDS game. Play a few rounds and your wrist will get tired. One of the more wrist-wrenching games is the one where Mawasunda sits on top of a motorcycle and revs it up in time to the cues that appear from the right side of the screen. You'll have to jerk the Wii Remote like a motorcycle handle to rev up the engine which will give your wrist a workout.
