«©NCSX» It's been a while since Gainax has developed a new property. The company has been coasting along on the winds of the wildly successful Evangelion series which has permeated Japanese culture for the better part of a decade. Earlier this year, Gainax released Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann on TV Tokyo and captured a reasonably strong viewership. As is common with popular franchises, the seeding of other forms of media follows the primary property and we get a crack at the portable video game version this week. The NDS action-adventure follows the storyline of the animation but introduces new characters and stylus-based interaction/action.
 

   The game is broken up into interaction sequences where Simon speaks to fellow diggers and non-player characters encountered during the course of the adventure. When certain junctures are reached, players engage in action-packed Gunmen mech battles where the touchpen is used to control the movement, firepower, and defensive maneuvers. Battles are fought on the top NDS screen while the touch screen shows the control panel as well as a grid-based local area map. Occasionally, a mini-game pops up for some quick stylus-based interaction.
 

Bonus Schwag
   Every copy of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann is bundled with a special edition animation DVD which features an original 13-minute episode that serves as a prologue to the story in the animation series. Please note the DVD is region-2 and will only play on Japanese territory DVD players or modified all-region DVD players which are about as common as grains of sand on the beach nowadays.

«©NCSX» The Valaim Empire is on the warpath and their actions rouse resistance from two neighboring countries. The protagonist is a mercenary named Fazz who's services have been employed by the Nightweld Empire to guard the Tower of Wind from attack. From a simple assignment, Fazz eventually goes on mission to save the land of Mardias from utter cataclysm.

   Originally released on the Playstation in 2001 to mixed reviews, Hoshigami on the NDS is an overhaul of the original which makes for a more enjoyable gaming experience. The game features updated graphics, new missions, a new character named Kasha who looks like Fazz but with red eyes, three difficulty levels including an Easy Mode, multiple endings, more save spots, and complete stylus control if desired.

Played similarly to earlier Digimon role playing adventures, players start the game by selecting a male or female hero and eventually get to choose one Digimon from three possible choices. From there, the game takes the player from Digimon Central to the Digimon Ranch to the game over world where most of the exploration and battling takes place. Digimon Story features a simple battle system where up to five Digimon in your party attack enemies in sequence. The attack position of party members and enemies are shown on the upper screen and everyone takes a turn until one side loses.

In Taito's Insect Story, players take on the role of a young boy who explores his town and captures insects which are everywhere. After collecting a number of creepies, it's possible to pit them against opposing bugs in a card fighting game. A battle can consist of up to 4 insects on your team vs a squad of enemy bugs where the strongest wins. After fighting insects, defeated bugs are added to the player's database where they may be viewed later in a gallery. A wireless function in the game is used for trading bug data with friends and a circle of insect collectors may share each other's data to build up respective databases.

«©NCSX» Miles Edgeworth comes into his own in Capcom's Gyakuten Kenji where the gray-haired legal eagle takes up the position of lead prosecutor. Resplendent in his crazy eccentric purple outfit, Miles looks the part of an old school court dandy but he's dead serious about the law. By using wits, his legal know-how, and a confrontational attitude, Miles gets to the bottom of four cases featured in the latest Gyakuten game.

   The first episode is titled "Turnabout Visitor" where a deceased police detective named Shinji Nakamado is discovered by Miles in his office. Soon afterwards, police investigators and Dick Gumshoe are on the scene but Gumshoe is accused of the crime by a prosecutor named Makoto Yuki. It's up to Miles to help his friend by finding the truth and setting Dick free. Miles' job is to investigate crime scenes, gather clues, and present a rock-solid case.

«©NCSX»The irrepressible Stafi (aka Stafy) is back in another side-scrolling platform game where the five-pointed action hero jump, spins, and shoots his way through candy-colored levels. Stafi's sister Stapy also returns to give her brother a hand with the cooperation feature where two players can join up and tackle bosses and stages together. Stapy is similar to her sibling in that she moves and spins just like Stafi but she's colored pink and wears a bow.

   A new feature in the game is Stafi's ability to transform into a fire-breathing dragon or a ghost to contend with different obstacles encountered on the various stages. Similar to previous Stafi adventures on the Gameboy, vehicles and animals may be used as carriages to travel through the levels in grand style. In addition to the overall adventure, a number of mini-games (card tricks, matching games, etc) may be enjoyed to break the monotony of the platform action.

If all that sounds good then Grand Trucker Aniki might just be your cup of tea. Players work for a company that provides transport services for their customers. Whether it be hauling perishable seafood or popular consumer products, players move cargo from point A to point B in a safe and timely manner.

   In addition to driving the truck, there's mini-games where players operate a forklift inside the warehouse, wash the truck, and perform maintenance on the rig. When it's time for a romance with a coworker, truckers may drive to their favorite spots such as a ramen shop where the eats are cheap or to an upscale restaurant if they've acquired a taste for the good life.
