The Tachikoma of Ghost in the Shell were once fearsome machines with squeaky voices. They were well-armed, fast, and scrabbled quickly to points of conflict like war machines are apt to do. That was then.
Nowadays, the Tachikoma are rounded, innocuous, and completely devoid of the killing spirit. They're like candy or juicy baubles of sparkling PVC that have widespread appeal. Sometimes we wonder if this is the fate of all pop culture phenomenon in Japan - where everything eventually becomes adorable and all edges are rounded off...
Preorders for the Tachikoma Trading Figures Vol 3 will ship in August 2008 at JPY3800 per box of 12 figures or US$38.90 from NCS.
Wave rolls onwards with their popular W.H.A.M. (Wave High Advance Model) series of toys with a new Tachikoma variant. There's been six other Tachikoma W.H.A.M. toys released to market already and the upcoming version is dubbed the "Solid State Society Version" which is packaged with a trenchcoat-wearing Makoto Kusanagi fixed-pose figure.
The Tachikoma measures 17.30 x 17.30 x 11.6 cm (6.81 x 6.81 x 4.56") in dimension and is constructed of blue ABS. The mech's standard weapons include a grenade launder and a gatling gun which may be mounted on the mech's undercarriage. Preorders are welcome to ship in late August 2008 at JPY5000 or US$49.90 from NCS.
The default color of the Tachikoma is blue with white trim. However, in episode 12 of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, two color variants were shown: a silver-painted Tachikoma which was eventually destroyed and a yellow-painted model which was also wrecked in an all-out assault against the Umibozu.
NCS has peddled a few yellow-painted Tachikoma toys in the past year but Fewture's Tachikoma Silver Sofubi is the first gray-gunmetal colored version that we'll stock later this year. The toy is made of soft-vinyl for a pliable mech that's somewhat shiny. Preorders ship today and new orders welcome at JPY6800 or US$65 from NCS.
Movic continues their assault on the wallets of the Tachikoma fan base with a 2008 calendar which is bundled with three exclusive figures. The monthly pages of the desktop calendar feature the Tachikoma in various situations that are somewhat interesting to look at. If they're not to your liking, you can make colorful origami with the pages.
In addition to the monthly calendar action, three PVC renditions of Tachikoma are included in the package - a blue regulation issue model, a rare yellow Tachikoma with racing stripes, and a cherry red model which looks like a piece of malformed jellybean sculpture. All preorders have shipped yesterday and new orders are welcome to ship this afternoon.

Good Smile Company's line of Nendoroid toys such as the Sabre (Fate Stay Night) figure and the Mesousa set invariably feature rounded sculpts and big heads. The company ships a 130mm (5.11") Nendoroid Tachikoma which represents the first mechanical construct in the product line.
The new Tachikoma features the rounded proportions that have come to define the Nendoroid line but neither the pod nor the body are exaggerated in size. The four legs are stubby and are fitted with wheels while Tachikoma's pincers are functional and may be opened and closed to grip the Eneuron Organic canister included with the toy. The default weapon that is affixed to the undercarriage of the mech is a grenade launcher but it may be swapped out for a gatling gun. A sheet of decals is also included to paste on Tachikoma's body. Tachikoma generally garners love whenever a new toy is released. Megahouse tests the level of affection in the marketplace with a another 1/20 scale Tachikoma which measures roughly 13cm tall and is crafted from ABS plastic. Instead of the blue patina that was painted onto the original Perfect Piece Tachikoma, the upcoming variant is colored a deep yellow color. Tachikoma are usually painted blue and speak with squeaky voices. However, in episode 12 of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, two color variants were shown: A silver-painted Tachikoma which was eventually destroyed and a yellow-painted model which was also wrecked in an all-out assault against the Umibozu.
Features on the Tachikoma include rolling wheels under the legs, properly formed gun turrets, a pod which opens up to unveil the winsome Motoko Kusanagi inside, and pincers that are molded to look like the pincers we know and love from GITS.
A few months ago, Fewture graciously updated their preorder information for the long awaited EX Chogokin Tachikoma diecast and NCS opened up preorders. Trading was brisk and after months of anticipation, the toy is finally in stock. The EX Gokin Tachikoma measures 15.50cm or roughly 6.00" in length and it's a beauty.
We've been amassing a collection of Tachikoma toys in the past couple of years and today's Fewture production is possibly the prettiest one yet. We placed it under our studio lights this morning and the blue-tinged bling was blinding. Maybe the right word is sparkling but it was brilliant in any case. The Fewture Tachikoma features mechanical feet instead of wheels and the Gatling gun in front may be swapped out with a grenade launcher. All preorders will ship today and new orders are welcome. «more»
Good Smile Company's line of Nendoroid toys such as the Sabre (Fate Stay Night) figure and the Mesousa set invariably feature rounded sculpts and big heads. There's a Death Note Yagami Nendoroid figure shipping this summer which sports a huge melon head. The company has recently started preorders for a 130mm Nendoroid Tachikoma which represents the first mechanical construct in the product line.
Preorders are welcome to ship in Oct 2007.
If you've ever wanted a Tachikoma positioned close to your heart, FujiCreation's silver Tachikoma necklace hits the spot. Small of size and yet glittery and shiny, the Tachikoma pendant hangs like a high-tech metallic beetle and is sure to attract the eye of a Ghost-in-the-Shell-loving thief or an ambitious cutpurse. NCS recommends tucking it in when shuffling around crowded city streets.
The sterling silver Tachikoma pendant measures 2cm in length and nearly that much in height. A silver chain which attaches to the Tachikoma's pod is also included with the pendant which measures 45cm. Since the Tachikoma pendant can be considered jewelry, it's packaged in a velour-covered jewel box. Preorders are welcome to ship on or around February 28, 2007.
