«©NCSX» On an episode of Good Morning America back in October 2008, singer and songwriter India Arie appeared on the show for an interview with host Robin Roberts. During the interview, India whipped out a Nintendo DS fitted with a copy of Hiite Utaeru DS Guitar M-06 and started playing chords and assembled a tune in the space of seconds. During the interview, Ms Arie composed a song for Roberts who was recovering from breast cancer and India mentioned that she used the guitar software to compose songs.

   Since the release of Guitar M-06 in 2007, KORG DS and a DSi-powered sequel have become available for musicians to compose their melodies on the DS. In a few months, the creator of Guitar M-06 will release the next progression in their music game/composition software which is titled Jaka Jaka Music M-09. The free-play guitar software features six modulation effects and a recording function to save compositions to game card. Essentially then, two NDS units and copies of Jaka² can potentially be all that's needed for a pair of performance artists to become a street band. We'd advise them to lug out a pair of speakers if the acoustics on the street corner aren't up to the standards of Carnegie Hall.

   Unlike Guitar M-06 which was only a guitar simulator, Jaka Jaka Music also includes a rhythm game where players listen to a song selection from 1200 tracks. Players can strum a guitar or hit a virtual drum set during the course of the game in time to the stroke cues. The 1200 songs are simple renditions culled from the J-Pop, rock, folk, pop, animation, and classical genres.

«©NCSX» The light music club at Sakura High School is about to be extinguished due to lack of interest. When Ritsu Tainaka hears the bad news, she inducts her friend Mio Akiyama into the club and lures Tsumugi Kotobuki into the fold as well. All they need is one more member to keep the light music club alive and salvation lies in a student named Yui Hirasawa. The girls aren't particularly good at playing their instruments and Yui might be able to handle the castanets but she's made the guitarist of the group. Together, the students practice, grow musically, consume a lot of sweets, and eventually gain renown and recognition for their performances.

Sega's K-ON! Houkago Live!! rhythm game for the PSP features the original cast of K-ON! along with a fifth club member named Azusa Nakano who may be seen on the center of the cover insert. Start a game and the cast of musicians appears in the background whilst music notes appear on the bottom of the screen. A cue marker moves from the left to the right and players are commanded to hit the face buttons on each musical note as the marker reaches it. Solo play is standard but up to five gamers may link up for a jam session where every member of the Light Music Club is represented.

«©NCSX» A few weeks ago, Pentavision released DJ Max Clazziquai Edition which featured the musical stylings of Korean music group Clazziquai which is made up of DJ Clazzi, Alex Chu, and Horan Choi. Whereas the Clazziquai Edition was designed for amateurs and average players, the Black Square Edition is targeted at "professionals" capable of tackling cues by smashing out inputs like a rhythm maniac. To this end, an 8-button mode is featured in the aptly named Professional Mode which Pentavision describes as "Crazy mix by using 8 buttons." In the OPTION menu, players may customize the buttons for 4B, 5B, 6B, 4BFX, and 6BFX to suit your preference. Once the game boots up, you'll be able to choose the language from Korean, English, or Chinese. True to form, the game is challenging with a smattering of cues that rain down with nonstop force and frequency.

Songs in the game include "I want you" by Lin G, "Sweet Shining Shooting Star" from Croove, "Heart of Witch" by ReX, and "Landscape" from Tsukasa. The game modes are as follows: Club Tour, Arcade Black Square, Network Battle, Collection, Link Disc, and Album. The Link Disc function allows gamers to use tracks from the earlier DJ Max Portable games and the Album contains 16 tracks at the outset that may be played along with their respective videos. The Collection section collates assorted unlocked data such as Club Tour Emblems, Images, Movies, and the Internet Ranking Service.

Rhythm Tengoku Gold - Import Preorder

The original Rhythm (Heaven) Tengoku game for the Gameboy Advance sold over 300,000 copies. We recall having to restock the game many times until there was no more to be had from Japan. Fast forward two years and Nintendo starts preorders for a sequel which features more simple rhythm games.

Based on the content in the original Rhythm Tengoku, the mini-games are simple in scope but challenging in practice. To register hits, the button tapping had to be very precise. Any lag was generally registered as a miss as aptly demonstrated in the introductory beat meter exercise.

Rhythm Tengoku Gold (NDS リズム天国ゴールド) features another bunch of mini-games but this time, they require precise touch-pen tapping in tune with the onscreen cues. One game features an onscreen eater who chomps on a pie with your tapping help and another game features vegetable picking. Music producer Tsunku returns to oversee the music and rhythm action. Ontama Onpu Shima Hen

Trek to the Onpuu Islands and use the stylus to tap or capture creatures and send them off the screen. Once that's done, hit the matching arrow cues as they move from right to left on the conveyer track located at the top of the screen. The creatures appear in the center area of the touch screen and you'll have to tap or draw circles around each one. If multiple creatures of the same color appear, it's possible to circle them all to send them away. Each tapped creature is accompanied by an arrow cue. When you hit the arrow cues, you'll be rewarded with a "Good," "Great," or "Master" rating on the upper left corner of the screen. Dance Battle Audition Portable

During an audition, an aspiring star attempts to impress talent or casting agents by singing and dancing. Move and flow like Deer Park Spring water and you might get a callback. Audition Portable is sort of like that. Based on the popular Audition Online game for the PC, PSP players get to follow arrow cues ala DDR and watch as their onscreen dancer performs. If you hit the cues brilliantly, the dancer sways and spins like a hero. Botch the cues however and your tiny dancer may appear to be inebriated as her two left feet get in the way of themselves.

Audition Portable features a 67 song track list with a mix of Korean pop, trance, club music, and more. While one can play the game solo, a network mode option allows up to six players to participate. As mentioned earlier, the cues consist of a sequence of arrows that point north, south, east, and west. To match them, tug on the d-pad accordingly in the directions as they appear. Once the string of cues have been hit, wait for the "closing cue" to complete the move. As you finish each string, you'll be ranked with "Miss," "Bad," "Cool," "Great," and "Perfect." Chain a number of "Perfect" rankings together and you'll be earning bonus points to scale up your score and racking up Den points. For the uninitiated, Den is the coin of the realm in the world of Dance Battle Audition. With a man-purse full of Den, players may purchase goodies and outfits.
