The President's passing gives his son Rufus the opening to become president of the company. To commemorate the event, the Shinra company holds an inauguration ceremony to mark Rufus' ascension which was complete with a parade, red banners, and red drinking cups. Why the color red? Because Rufus means "Red" in Latin. Square's thoughtful like that and considerate of decorum.

   Square Enix celebrates Rufus' presidency in Final Fantasy VII by announcing the production of a red cup with the name "Rufus" scribbled across the front in the same script that was used in the banners in his in-game parade. The cup is colored a dark red that's semi-opaque so the level of the beverage inside may be spied which is useful for anticipating refills.
