«©NCSX» The original Family Trainer enjoyed super sales in Japan on the heels of Nintendo's Wii Fit which got players active instead of loafing. Bandai tries once again to get families off of the sofa and onto their feet with another edition of Family Trainer which contains over 15 mini-games of athletic enterprise. Some games include:

» Half-pipe skateboarding
» BMX motorcycle racing
» Canyon wall climbing where each handhold is an arrow cue
» Skydiving
» Inline Skating
» Wind Surfing

Please note this product listing is for the regular edition of Family Trainer which only includes the software. You'll need a mat controller from the original Family Trainer in order to play this game. Failing that, NCS is also accepting preorders for a Family Trainer 2 Deluxe Bundle which includes the original Family Trainer game and a 2-player mat controller. Preorders for the regular edition are welcome to ship on December 10, 2009.

Milestone's new Shokera Renai Otona no Tame no Metabo Dassutsu Training software + accessory pack is designed to help users keep track of their daily caloric intake and exercise. The software runs on the NDS and serves as a diet diary to record your daily meal regimen. Photographs for roughly 500 dishes are included in the food database in case you're not sure what a hamburger looks like. Two accessories are included - a plastic pedometer with belt clip which tracks your daily walking distance and a tape measure so you can measure how big your belly is. If you're pudgy and want to lose the tire around your stomach, you can track your eating habits and exercise over a period of time and then reduce the consumption or boost the exercise accordingly to meet your target weight.

Back in the summer of 1986, Bandai released a fitness game titled Family Trainer: Athletic World on the 8-bit Famicom which shipped with a flimsy mat controller. The idea was to get kids off the couch and in motion with simple mini-games that were played by stepping on the circular cues located on top of the mat. Sales were mediocre and Bandai eventually abandoned hopes of starting a video game fitness craze.

Fast forward two decades later and Bandai's at it again. Emboldened by the recent success of Nintendo's Wii Fit, the company revives Family Trainer for a new generation of gamers. Similar to the original incarnation, Bandai includes a flexible mat controller with the game which looks suspiciously like Konami's dancing pad. The mat is designed for use by one or two players who are able to step lively side by side. This means the entire brood can take turns engaging in gaming exercises which take place upon the mat controller. That's not all folks - the Wii Remote is also used in some games for arm waving antics so the whole body gets a workout.

Bandai touts over 15 cooperative and competitive games in Family Trainer including one where players make like lumberjacks and leap over rolling logs by jumping on the mat.

Tokutei! Metabo Juku - Preorder

Problem: You need to watch your caloric intake.

Scenario: The waitress at the diner doesn't know how many calories the cheeseburger with a side order of fries contains. She doesn't give a hoot.

Solution: Tokutei! Metabo Juku which contains a database with calorie counts for 9000 kinds of foods and dishes. A diet diary function also allows users to record each meal and tally the total calories consumed over the course of a day. For those who tend to plan in advance, a monthly eating schedule may be created and (hopefully) followed by calorie-conscious consumers. Preorders are welcome to ship on May 29, 2008.

Back in 1982 when the VCR was revolutionizing the way the world watched television, a video titled Jane Fonda Workout was released. By playing the video tape, couch potatoes were able to observe the limber Jane Fonda in spandex and legwarmers performing assorted exercises. The video went on to sell millions of copies and a fitness craze was born.

Wii Fit is sort of like that. Ever since Nintendo released the Wii Fit bundle in Japan, over a million units have shifted to eager consumers anxious to get a Wii powered workout in their living rooms. Instead of Jane Fonda (Barbarella to you and me), Wii Fit features non-descript characters who perform exercises on screen that you're supposed to mimic.

Since Wii Fit has a massive installed user base, Hori hopes to capitalize on the new fitness craze by releasing a Mat. When preordering from NCS, please ignore the fact that you can buy a rug at Home Depot for about $5 that would probably serve the same purpose. The Wii Fit Mat measures a tidy 183 x 61cm (72.04 x 24.01") in area and is made of a non-slip material that'll cling to your floor like a thick wedge of Saran Wrap. Preorder.
