«©NCSX» Treasure's vision of Astro Boy on the Gamboy Advance a few years back was inspiring. The controls, the visuals, and the overall feel of the game gave us new respect for Astro Boy and his innate abilities. A new Astro Boy game wings its way to the Japanese marketplace this week but Treasure isn't involved. Not even an iota. This time around, the PSP Astro Boy game is being published by D3 Publisher of Simple 2000 gaming fame.
Atom is a side scrolling platform game and shooter where players take control of Astro Boy and battle the minions of President Stone who runs Metro City. When Mr. Stone puts monstrous robot called the "Peacekeeper" into active service (which goes rogue), Astro Boy must stop it before Metro City is destroyed. The Peacekeeper fills up the entire height of the screen and presents a formidable opponent against Astro's power.
The platform action is standard fare where Astro jumps over obstacles, shoots up goons, and continuously moves from left to right across the stages. The levels that feature side scrolling shooting are also standard fare with a difficulty level that's about average. The cross-fire never gets too intense and gamers who have conquered shmups of the recent past won't get bogged down by anything the game throws out. Astro's weapons include a laser cannon, a drill attack, and a machine gun attack where Astro spins on-screen and blasts everything around him.
