The four Minna no Jou games that were released earlier this year in quick succession were mere morsels and appetizers leading up to the main course. Sony's proper sequel to the original Minna no Golf Portable game ships today in Japan and the world of virtual golfing is all the better for it.
The game follows the gaming conventions of previous releases in the MinGol series and old hands will find it familiar and easy to get into. The characters look the same, the courses are expansive, and the play mechanics are tried and true. The hallmark of the series has been its simple and friendly interface as well as its no-nonsense gameplay. Check the wind, line up your sights, and swing away by tapping thrice on the "O" button. If you hit the ball well, you'll know it immediately by the rainbow-colored "Nice Shot!" that pops up on the screen. MinGol Portable 2 features 12 courses, 20 characters to use, and a wireless online mode so everyone (well, sixteen simultaneous users) can link up and enjoy a tourney together.
At the outset of the action, only two characters are available to select as your onscreen golfer - a feathery haired lad and a blonde-haired girl. The boy has more power but the girl has more spin and sidespin. The other roster entrants are all locked behind question marks. The first course is a PAR4 which is 366y from your vantage point to the hole. If you're able to hit PAR or better, the golfer avatar cheers but if you're only able to muster a bogey, he'll sit on the grass in a dejected fit of despair.
