SALE Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann (In Stock, Japan-NDS) US$78.90/set

NCS Product Synopsis
Update: October 25, 2007

«©NCSX» It's been a while since Gainax has developed a new property. The company has been coasting along on the winds of the wildly successful Evangelion series which has permeated Japanese culture for the better part of a decade. Earlier this year, Gainax released Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann on TV Tokyo and captured a reasonably strong viewership. As is common with popular franchises, the seeding of other forms of media follows the primary property and we get a crack at the portable video game version this week. The NDS action-adventure follows the storyline of the animation but introduces new characters and stylus-based interaction/action.

The game is broken up into interaction sequences where Simon speaks to fellow diggers and non-player characters encountered during the course of the adventure. When certain junctures are reached, players engage in action-packed Gunmen mech battles where the touchpen is used to control the movement, firepower, and defensive maneuvers. Battles are fought on the top NDS screen while the touch screen shows the control panel as well as a grid-based local area map. Occasionally, a mini-game pops up for some quick stylus-based interaction.

Bonus Schwag
Every copy of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann is bundled with a special edition animation DVD which features an original 13-minute episode that serves as a prologue to the story in the animation series. Please note the DVD is region-2 and will only play on Japanese territory DVD players or modified all-region DVD players which are about as common as grains of sand on the beach nowadays.

TOYS Yoko Ritona Real Image Version - New Import, In Stock

NCS Product Synopsis
«©NCSX» Most of Yoko's PVC incarnations in the past have been somewhat comical ala her Nendoroid and Revoltech turns. Even when Yoko was sculpted to look sexy in the Polygonia and Gift figures, she still had the "anime look" upon her buxom personage. It's time to get serious however.

The latest Yoko Ritona rendition from Max Factory is a "Real Image" figure which measures 27.50cm or 10.82" tall and is made of PVC. The "Real Image" designation means she's designed to look like an actual woman. Her body is proportioned properly with long limbs and her bosom appears natural instead of otherworldly. Yoko's face is also realistic with normal-shaped eyes and faintly rouged lips. Max Factory eschews the humongous "anime" eyes the Yoko possesses in the Gurren Lagann series... eyes which have been known to sparkle brighter than the Pleiades star system. In "Real Image," Yoko's eyes are enhanced with eyeliner and big lashes that enhance their realness. All preorders have shipped as of yesterday and new orders are welcome for dispatch today.

Revoltech Fraulein No. 16: 'Movie' Yoko Figure - In Stock

NCS Product Synopsis
«©NCSX» Yoko Ritona of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann fame is second only to Kanu Unchou from Ikkitousen in terms of the amount of toys she has engendered in Japan over the past two years. Yoko has her own Figma, MMS, and Revoltech toys as well as numerous figures from the usual PVC purveyors. However one Revoltech isn't enough. No, a second Revoltech is demanded by the fan base and Kaiyodo obliges with the Revoltech Fraulein No. 016: Gurren Lagann - 'Movie' Yoko Action Figure (No Boota Version) which ships this summer.

The new 1/10 scale Revo
ltech measures 15cm or roughly 6" in height and features 19 points of articulation so she's highly posable. Upon removing Yoko from her encasement, she's found prone on a plastic tray with an assortment of weaponry arrayed next to her. There's a sniper rifle, a hand gun, and hair pins. NCS is aware that hair pins aren't generally used as weapons but they can be in Yoko's capable hands. She's the kind of girl who doesn't just get even, she gets stabby. Preorders have shipped as of yesterday and new orders are welcome to ship today.

Gurren-lagann Yoko Space Look & Gunbee - JPN Preorder

«©NCSX» After her stint as a member of Team Dai-Gurren, Yoko Ritona decided to part ways with Simon and Nia to work as an elementary school teacher on a small isle. While there, Yoko takes on the moniker of Yomako and gets around by motoring along on a hovercycle known as the Gunbee. After a rescue mission to save Simon, Yoko eventually returns to the small isle as the principal of the school.

Previous sculptures of Yoko Ritona have focused on her days as a member of Team Gurren but Movic's upcoming
Gurren-lagann Yoko Space Look & Gunbee is based on her Yomako phase. The PVC figure is set to 1/5 scale and measures 25cm or 9.84" in length. Yoko straddles the Gunbee and wears a 2-piece bikini and a sheer gossamer-like shawl that's probably a raincoat of some sort. A pair of orange shades and white circus leggings complete the left-of-center ensemble.

Preorders are welcome to ship in mid-late February 2009 at JPY13800 or US$149 from NCS. Due to the size of the figure, NCS recommends only shipping by UPS Ground within the continental United States.

Gurren-Lagann Yoko no Dokuro T-Shirt - Import Preorder

Why is the Yoko Ritona (of Gurren-Lagann fame) themed t-shirt priced at JPY6000 or US$68.90? No one at NCS knows at this time but we have a couple of guesses. Maybe there's a few ounces of silver thread intertwined with the cotton fabric. Maybe the licensing costs were loftier than normal and Cospa was forced to super-size their retail price.

The Yoko no Dokuro T-Shirt features a skull with hair pins on the front and Yoko's sniper rifle on the pack. If you walk down the street wearing the t-shirt, you might be mistaken for a revolutionary warrior of some stripe. Preorders are welcome to ship in mid-late November 2008.

Nendroid Yoko Ritona - Preorder

Good Smile Company has started preorders for a Yoko Ritona Nendroid figure that shrinks the redheaded warrior into a munchkin with squat legs. If you squint at Yoko, she sort of looks like a fire hydrant with big round eyes. The Nendroid rendition of Yoko measures 10 cm or 3.93" tall and is packaged with a rifle that's taller than its mistress.

Additional accessories included in the Yoko Nendroid package include two extra faces to change her mood and extra hands for special posing purposes. Preorders are welcome to ship in mid-late February 2009 at JPY3500 or US$36.90 from NCS.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann Yoko Towel - Preorder

When purchasing a towel from a supplier in China, NCS can buy large plain towels for about 0.80 each before freight charges are assessed. Towels are commodities where the producers churn the product out and eke out a marginal profit.

When NCS purchases a towel from a toy distributor in Japan, we pay about $43 each before shipping charges. Why the huge price disparity?

Answer: Japanese companies own or license intellectual property which adds substantial value to commodities. A plain towel is worth 80 cents. A towel that's emblazoned with the likeness of Yoko Ritona or another pop-culture heroine is worth 53X that amount. Hint to self: Invest in IP.

Preorders for Cospa's Yoko Towel are welcome to ship in October 2008 at JPY5000 or US$49.90. The towel measures 40cm x 80cm in area and is made of cushiony cotton.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann Yoko MMS Figure - New

When it comes to posable consumer toys from Japan, NCS is of the opinion that Max Factory's Figma series lords over Kaiyodo's Revoltech and Konami's MMS lines. They're all good but Figma has an edge in terms of quality and ease of posing. It's a shame that Yoko Ritona of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann fame hasn't been Figma-tized yet but until that happens, we have Yoko MMS. Last year, Konami released a "Multi-Movable System" version of Yoko which sold out fairly quickly but Konami ships a reproduction of the figure for fans who were late to the party.

The MMS version of Yoko measures 15cm tall and features jointed limbs so the figure may be posed in a variety of action stances. In addition to the figure, a rifle accessory is included in the package so Yoko can ape Rambo or Arnold before he went into politics. An extra face and hair, two extra pairs of hands, and a mini mole-mascot named Buta are also included.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann Yoko 1/5 Scale - Preorder

Yoko's assault on the Japanese toy industry continues with another figure that's being produced by Polygonia and distributed by Movic. The latest PVC incarnation of Yoko is sculpted to 1/5 scale and measures 25cm or 9.84" in height.

Yoko wears a swimsuit (yes, it's basically a swimsuit) and sits nearly spread-eagled on a grey block of some sort. In addition to her bikini, Yoko wears pink leggings which are encapsulated by white go-go boots. They could also be cowboy boots. She's armed with her rifle but she won't be using it anytime soon. The rifle serves as a leg rest and Yoko uses her leg as an arm rest. Preorders are welcome to ship in mid-late October 2008 at JPY6000 or US$62.90 from NCS. Due to the size of this particular toy, we recommend only shipping with UPS Ground within the United Sates to avoid costly "dimensional weight" air shipping charges.

Fraulein Revoltech Yoko Action Figure - Import Preorder

Yoko has already gotten the Figma and Multi-Movable System (MMS) toy treatment so it was only a matter of time until she got a Revoltech version in her honor. Kaiyodo's 1/10 scale Yoko Revoltech looks good and appears to be very posable. Yoko has an hourglass figure which accentuates her outfit which consists of a bikini top and a bikini bottom. As an added bonus, four Yoko heads are included in the package so that her expression and demeanor can be changed depending on the situation.

Preorders are welcome to ship in mid-late October 2008 at JPY2190 or US$23.90 from NCS.

Revoltech No. 50 - New Import, In Stock

In the Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann animated series, the mechs are known as Gunmen. There's hasn't been enough TTGL toy merchandising in Japan so it's Kaiyodo's duty to induct a Gunman into the Revoltech toy line.

The beauty of the Revoltech toys lie in the "Revolver Joints" which allow for full freedom when posing the figure. Once a joint is positioned, it'll ratchet into place and stay there until you change its position. The Gunman measures 12cm or 4.72" tall and features a total of 19 joints. Thanks to the many points of articulation, the robot may be positioned into battle stances galore or even into thoughtful repose. An extra helmeted head, a golden drill weapon, and four extra hands are included in the product packaging. Preorders have shipped already and new orders are welcome.
